How to Transform Your Space with Organic Modern Design
Introduction to Organic Modern Design
After almost a decade of sterile greys and whites dominating interior design trends, the last few years of remote working and longing for the outdoors have given rise to a new style that seems to be just about everywhere you look: Organic Modern.
Organic modern design holds a special place in our hearts at Studio Steidley and has been one of our favorite styles to incorporate into homes in the past few years. It merges the clean, crisp lines of modern aesthetics with the comforting, earthy elements of organic style, resulting in spaces that are both calming and energizing.
Organic Modern design offers a fresh take on modern living, inviting you to connect with nature while enjoying the comforts of urban life.
What is Organic Modern Style?
Organic modern design is distinguished by its effortless blend of minimalist modernism and the soft, natural aspects of organic aesthetics. This style is all about simplicity and clean architectural lines, paired with organic shapes and the raw textures of materials like wood, stone, and fibers.
It embraces open, light-filled spaces that connect fluidly, often highlighted by expansive windows that integrate the outdoors. The color schemes are typically neutral, enriched with soft textures and occasional vibrant accents that introduce warmth and depth to the environment.
Key Features of Organic Modern Style
In one of our recent projects in Flower Mound, Texas, we had the chance to incorporate several key features of organic modern design. This 9,000 sq foot transformation from an Old World Style to a warm organic modern sanctuary showcases what organic modern design style is all about. The lot was surrounded by woods and a lake view, so we knew the look would marry perfectly with the estate.
Our client was a family of five with small children and dogs, so we wanted to ensure that the remodel reflected the energy and vibrancy of their lifestyle, true to the character of organic modern design. We also ensured that every selection was durable yet luxurious.
Natural Materials
Bringing the outside in through natural-looking materials is critical to successful organic modern design. For the Flower Mound project, our team chose to use a stone backsplash with a distinctive curved edge. We also created a custom stain to turn dated, old-world red oak flooring into a more modern floor that now echoes the look of a naturally colored white oak.
Open Layout
Open layouts are key to the warm and inviting atmosphere that organic modern homes often exemplify. In this project, we opened up the home's floor plan and added a wall of windows to enhance family interactions and foster a visual connection with the stunning natural surroundings.
Neutrals with Color Pops
Gone are the days of cold grey - the organic modern design style emulates nature in every way, including through the types of colors used. In this project, we embraced a palette of creamy beiges, charcoal and soft whites, accented with serene blues and natural greens from indoor plants, blending tranquility with vibrant life.
Living Finishes:
To ensure that every last detail connects, don’t forget to opt for living finishes over artificial-looking sheens. We incorporated unlacquered brass fixtures and dark walnut elements that will age and evolve with the family, adding a deeply personal touch to their home.
Organic Modern Kitchen
In the Flower Mound project, the kitchen is where our passion for organic modern design truly came to life. Our team designed custom cabinetry combining dark walnut with creamy light beige, creating a space that feels both inviting and elegantly grounded.
The centerpiece, a dark walnut-stained island, is a dramatic visual anchor that contrasts beautifully with the lighter cabinetry around it. We introduced black metal and glass upper cabinets on the side wall to add a contemporary flair that still harmonizes with the room's overall aesthetic.
The statement island pendants and unlacquered brass sconces reflect our love for living finishes—materials that age beautifully and add character to your space over time. The stone backsplash with its unique curved edge smoothly transitions into classic subway tile, merging traditional and contemporary styles with grace.
Organic Modern Dining Room
Another hallmark of organic modern design is the focus on helping you connect with the outdoors in every indoor space. We designed the dining room with this in mind, putting stunning outdoor views front and center. Warm white walls and understated accents help draw focus to the large, open windows.
Our team placed two real 10-foot olive trees to anchor the window wall, bringing a piece of the tranquility indoors. The budget-friendly update to the fireplace, featuring an oversized tile surround and a quartz waterfall edge mantle, blends perfectly with the room's modern aesthetics. An oversized John Richard mirror with jagged brass edges enhances the room's tall ceilings and amplifies the natural light, creating an airy, open vibe.
The furnishings, including a white marble dining table and two-toned upholstered dining chairs with elegant brass bases, introduce understated luxury while maintaining a cozy, welcoming atmosphere.
Organic Modern Furniture
Choosing the right furniture is key to embodying the organic modern design philosophy. In this project, every piece was selected with both functionality and style in mind.
The walnut sideboard in the dining room with Art Deco brass detailing is both a practical storage solution and a conversation starter that resonates with the home's elegant, organic theme. Styling this with the playful marble lamps was a perfect pairing to anchor the dining room.
In the living room, we used natural wood texture in the reclaimed wood console table to give texture and balance behind the sofa. We selected a round cocktail table and curvy swivel chairs that also bring texture in through the camel boucle upholstery.
All of these elements help exude the Organic Modern style in our design. Thoughtful placement and design of the furniture ensure that the home feels ready to live in, creating a flow that enhances both the beauty and functionality of the space.
Adapting Organic Modern Design to Lifestyle
At Studio Steidley, we start every design project by understanding your lifestyle. Whether you’re a busy professional looking for a serene retreat or a social butterfly who loves hosting gatherings, our designs aim to reflect and accommodate your unique way of life. This Flower Mound project was a stunning example of how we tailor organic modern aesthetics to make every space not only beautiful but perfectly suited to the needs of those who live there; as we like to say here at Studio Steidley, this is the key to achieving a beautifully livable space.
